The 2015-2019 Volkswagen E-Golf is a vehicle introduced in the US to comply with the state of California’s requirements for zero-emission vehicles. Unlike many throwaway electric vehicles from FCA, Ford, and GM, E-golf is offered nationwide. There are only about 20,000 E-Golf on the street, but E-golf is an excellent example of the service opportunities available in stores.

Filter

The only filter for the E-Golf is for the cabin. VW recommends changing the filter every 10,000 miles. Since the E-Golf doesn’t require regular oil changes, it’s easy to miss a cabin air filter. Filters are easy to change, and no tools are required.

cooler

The E-Golf uses the G15 cooler. While the maintenance schedule doesn’t specify replacement intervals, it does need to be checked every 10,000 miles for grade and condition. Coolant is used to cool the battery and motor. It is also used to heat the cabin.

While coolant has an easier service life than coolant in internal combustion engines, the additive package that protects against corrosion can wear out over time. Ignoring coolant will cause costly damage to the motor and battery.

Battery

The E-Golf has two batteries. Under the hood is a 12 volt AGM battery which is used to power nearly all electrical systems and components, including the battery management system for high voltage batteries. While the vehicle is operating, the 12 volt battery is charged using the high voltage battery. Like all AGM batteries, capacity and state of charge may decrease over time.

Maintenance free high voltage battery. However, if the car has not been used for two or three weeks, both batteries may run out.

Suspension

Suspension under the E-Golf is the same as the Mk7 MQB platform. Most of the parts, such as control arms, steering components and ride control are shared. Alignment angle is very important for the range of any electric vehicle. If the toe or camber is out of specification, such as dragging the tire sideways on the road.

Brake

The brakes are the same as other Mk7 MQB Golfs and Jettas. The rear brake uses a parking brake with an electric motor on the caliper. Use the scan tool to retract the pistons and realign the calipers after changing the pads. Like coolant, there is no brake fluid change interval. In contrast, VW recommends checking every 10,000 miles.

Tire

The E-Golfs come with a 16-inch wheel and tire package that comes with tires designed to lower rolling resistance for increased range. There have been reports of customers installing conventional tires reducing range. Several replacement “eco” tires are available in 205/55R16 sizes with reduced rolling resistance. These tires usually have a stiffer sidewall and a different compound to reduce rolling resistance.

Inflation is another critical maintenance item. Even if the TPMS lamp is not lit, a 15% drop in inflation can result in significant loss of coverage.
