Volvo on Wednesday gave a look at the interior of its EX30 electric crossover, which will be revealed in full on June 7.
The EX30 has been confirmed by Volvo to be the smaller of the compact duo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, pointing to a vehicle in the subcompact segment, and despite its small size, it will make its way to US showrooms.
As an entry-level vehicle, the EX30 will forgo the signature premium interior design found on Volvo’s larger models in favor of a design and materials focus on practicality and sustainability.
The 12.3-inch touchscreen will serve as the main infotainment center and display many of the popular preloaded Google apps. The system will also support wireless Apple CarPlay.
Volvo EX30 interior storage
Below the screen is an adjustable center console with lots of storage areas, including one for the rear seat passengers. Inside the tailgate, Volvo will be adding a handy guide with key interior dimensions—perfect for visits to Ikea.
The EX30 will also boast an industry first feature in the form of a soundbar that extends the length of the dashboard. It would sit under the windshield and incorporate multiple speakers into a single structure, which Volvo says helps save wires and other materials. Buyers will be able to choose between a standard audio system and a high-end option from Harman Kardon.
Volvo will also offer a design theme for the EX30, which the automaker calls “room”. One room will feature a denim theme with recycled denim. Other sustainable materials will include recycled plastics, hemp-based fibers and sustainably sourced wool.
Volvo EX30 teaser
As for the exterior, spy shots of the prototype show a design inspired by the EX90 mid-size electric SUV, whose market launch was postponed to 2024.
Volvo hasn’t said when the EX30 will go on sale in the US, but it will likely arrive in 2024. Based on comments by Volvo CEO Jim Rowan to Australian media a few months ago, production of the EX30 will likely be handled in China and sales in that market should start before 2023 ends.
The EX30 will aim to appeal to younger buyers and has the potential to become a top selling brand. Volvo sold 615,121 vehicles in 2022 but wants to increase that to around 1.2 million vehicles by 2025—half of which will be EVs.
