The Volvo EX30 electric crossover that will make its debut on June 7 won’t skimp on safety technology despite being the smallest model in its lineup, Volvo said on Wednesday.
The EX30 will come with active and passive safety systems similar to those found on larger Volvo vehicles, including a new feature designed to provide visual and audible warnings when a door is about to be opened and a cyclist is approaching from behind.
This feature is part of the safety suite of Volvo’s Safe Room Technologies that will be available on the EX30 and also includes automatic emergency braking for intersections, where a vehicle traveling at low speed will automatically stop if another vehicle traveling in the adjacent lane in front fails to stop.
Another feature is the driver monitor which detects eye and facial movements as well as hand placement on the steering wheel and gives a warning if it determines the driver is distracted or asleep.

As for passive safety, Volvo says the EX30 will feature high-strength steel to strengthen the safety cage, with special attention being paid to the roof and support pillars. High-strength steel will also be used to protect the battery.
Volvo says there will also be advanced restraint technology to protect occupants in the event of a crash, although no details were provided.
The EX30 prototype has been seen being tested on public roads. They suggest a similar design to the EX90 mid-size electric SUV that was revealed last fall, but on a smaller scale. The EX30 is expected to sit in the subcompact segment.
Volvo has confirmed the EX30 will make its way to the US, although timing is uncertain. Given the current cadence of Volvo products, the EX30 will arrive in dealerships in 2024 as a 2025 model.
