Verstappen comes from behind to win 2023 F1 Miami Grand Prix

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen extended his lead in the 2023 Formula One World Championship with an impressive run on Sunday at the Miami Grand Prix, having started from ninth on the grid and finished in first place.

Fellow Red Bull driver and pole-sitter Sergio Perez finished second, roughly five seconds behind, while Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso rounded out the top three, crossing the line some 26 seconds behind the winner.

Early in the race, Perez joined Alonso at the front of the grid and quickly took the lead, while Alonso was forced to hold off Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Further down the course, Verstappen quickly moved up the ladder and finished second after just 15 laps.

Perez made his first and only pit stop on the 20th lap, and returned to the race in fourth. He then made a series of fastest laps and was in second place when Alonso stopped himself on lap 25. The lead Verstappen pushed hard on his old tire to build up the gap, while Perez tweaked his tires to ensure it. ready to survive until the end of the race.

Verstappen eventually retired on lap 45, returning in second place but only 1.2 seconds behind Perez and with 12 laps remaining. With new tires and the use of DRS, Verstappen quickly passed his teammate in the following laps and managed to hold on to pole position all the way to the finish. The defending champion also managed to record the fastest lap in the final stage to secure bonus points.

Following the weekend’s action, Verstappen’s tally in the Drivers’ Championship has grown to 119 points. Perez is second with 105 points and Alonso is third with 75 points. In the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull leads with 224 points, compared to 102 points from Aston Martin and 96 points from Mercedes-Benz AMG. The next race on the calendar is the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Italy’s Imola racetrack in two weeks.
