Here are five top brake job tips for technicians.

Tip Number 1: Test Drive! You still have to go for a test drive. Do not go out of the bay and park the customer’s vehicle in the parking lot. A test drive will ensure that there are no abnormal brake pedal sounds, smells or sensations. A test drive will also help place the pads in the caliper.

Tip Numb2: Burn! Some techs still recommend you do 30 stops from 30 mph to polish the brake pads. This is done to cure the resin in the brake pads and transfer a layer of material to the rotor. To reduce the time and effort required to polish new pads, TRW ULTRA brake pads use CITEC. CITEC is a coating that helps coat the pads more quickly and increases braking power during early stops.

Tip Number 3. Lock! Some caliper bracket and guide pin bolts use a thread-to-thread fixing compound. The red, blue or even yellow compound must be reapplied. Some TRW Ultra brake pads come with bolts that have been treated with thread locking compound to save you aggravation.

Tip number 4: Adjust the parking brake. This is an easy adjustment that drivers will notice.

Tip Number 5: Reset! Some vehicles estimate brake pad wear using computer algorithms. Resetting this monitor can be done with a scan tool or using the driver information center.
