Tesla was one of the brands under pressure in the March license plate change with sales down 18.8% to 10,493 units in the overall market up 18.2%.
This came despite a series of price cuts to increase sales. In January Tesla announced price cuts on the entry level model with the Model 3 starting in price dropping from £51,090 to £42,990, and the Model Y Performance from £67,990 to £57,990.
Overall, sales of battery electric vehicle (BEV) shipments hit a monthly record high of 46,626, representing 18.6% growth in March.
Tesla’s year-over-year sales fell 14.1%. Tesla was the fifth fastest growing car brand in the UK last year with sales up 56% to 54,622 units.
Other automakers showing double-digit declines include Renault (-28.4%), Lexus (-26.9%), Fiat (-16.8%), Jaguar (-15.7%), Peugeot (-11, 1%) and Volvo (-10.4%) . Niche players smart and Abarth showed the biggest declines -85.8% and -70%, respectively.
Several brands showed strong performance for the month especially Cupra (+190.8%), Genesis (+151.4%) Subaru (130.6%), Polestar (105.3%) Maserati (+86.7%) , Honda (+66.7%) and Land Rover (+63.9%).
