Small and medium fleets are “struggling” to switch to electric vehicles

New research from Alphabet (GB) reveals that despite wanting to initiate the transition to electric vehicles (EV), 45% of fleet managers report a lack of time or necessary expertise to take the necessary first steps.

As the automaker continues to expand the EV market and product choices increase, EVs are becoming more accessible for small and mid-sized fleets.

The majority, 79%, of fleet decision makers agree that there are more EVs on the market that suit their needs now.

Despite this positive outlook, most businesses with smaller fleets are still in the early stages of making the switch. 58% of fleet managers report that less than 20% of the cars in their fleet currently run on electricity.

Progress has been noticeably slower for vans, with 66% of these managers reporting that less than 20% of their van fleet is electrified.

The increasing demand for EVs among employees, coupled with impending deadlines will pressure fleet managers to increase this proportion in the months and years to come.

According to Alphabet research, the biggest barrier to EV adoption for smaller fleets is not reluctance, but time and knowledge.

Of the businesses that have yet to introduce EVs into their fleet, 28% say that while this is something they would like to do, they just don’t have the time. While 17% said a lack of expertise hindered them.
