Off-road enthusiasts in the US will soon have an alternative to rugged SUVs like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in the form of the Ineos Grenadier, the first product of the newly minted lineup. British chemical giant Ineos’ automotive arm.
Ineos Automotive last week announced US pricing for the Grenadier and confirmed a May 31 start date for the reservation process through the company’s website. First customer deliveries here are slated for late 2023, meaning the Grenadier will arrive as a 2024 model. Orders will be finalized with dealers which Ineos will announce sometime in August.
The Grenadier will be offered in the US in three classes, priced at $71,500 for the Base class and $79,190 for the Trialmaster and Fieldmaster classes. Ineos says the more expensive class is pre-configured to suit professional off-roaders in the Trialmaster case and more off-roaders in the Fieldmaster case.
The names Trialmaster and Fieldmaster come from the fashion brand Belstaff, which is also owned by chemical company Ineos, and is known for its rugged clothing line, including water-resistant waxed cotton jackets. In the case of the Trialmaster, the Ineos includes features such as electronically activated front and rear differential locks, a raised air intake, an additional battery and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires. The Fieldmaster has similar upgrades in combination with comfort features like leather trim, carpeted floor mats and heated front seats.

There is currently only one body style, the five-door SUV, although Ineos is currently testing a Grenadier pickup truck prototype and has confirmed plans to begin production of the smaller Grenadier electric 4×4 in 2026.
The single powertrain for the Grenadier is a 3.0-liter turbo-6. The engine is sourced from BMW and in the Grenadier is connected to an 8-speed automatic and a four-wheel drive system with a 2-speed transfer case. Final specifications for the US market will be announced at a later date, but in other markets, the engine in the Grenadier develops 281 hp.
The Grenadier is based on a body-on-frame platform with a solid block axle, Panhard rods front and rear, and progressive coil springs. To help reduce weight, bodies are made from alloys of aluminum, high-strength steel, and even some composites. To aid development, Ineos teamed up with Austria’s Magna Steyr, the same company that helped Mercedes-Benz develop the G-Class and still makes the iconic SUV today.
Production of the Grenadier, which starts in mid-2022 for other markets, is handled at Mercedes’ former factory in Hambach, France.
