Rolls-Royce, the British brand synonymous with the luxury lifestyle, has once again outdone itself. Presents the Phantom Syntopia, which according to the brand is “the most technically complex Bespoke Phantom production yet”. Based on the Phantom Extended brand model, which serves as the perfect canvas, Phantom Syntopia was created in collaboration with renowned Dutch fashion designer and Haute Couture Iris van Herpen.
According to Rolls-Royce, “Phantom Syntopia takes its name from Iris van Herpen’s acclaimed 2018 collection, which was designed on the principles of biomimicry where art is inspired by patterns and shapes found in nature.”
“Just like the collection, which consists of a series of highly sculpted garments brought to life through motion, Phantom Syntopia strives to represent the elusive and subtle beauty of fluid movement in solid materials through the theme ‘Weaving Water’.”
The couture theme is subtly conveyed on the hood, where the iconic Weaving Water motif is expertly rendered. To do this, the craftsman must redistribute the pigment during the finishing process carefully so that it is visible.
From start to finish, Phantom Syntopia took four years of continuous development and will take its place in the personal collection of discerning brand customers. After the initial phases of designing the car, Rolls-Royce later shared that the exterior paintwork alone required more than 3,000 hours of testing and validation. The result: A gleaming facade that tints in the sun to reveal shades of purple, blue, magenta, and gold when viewed from various angles.
In the interior space, the collaboration between Rolls-Royce and Iris van Herpen is further exemplified as elements inside the car are handcrafted at the Home of Rolls-Royce by leading craftsmen and members of the fashion design team.
Upon opening Phantom Syntopia’s door, the Weaving Water Starlight Headliner would immediately catch its owner’s attention. Made using a single sheet of leather, the precise cuts are made to reveal a silver “liquid metal” texture and this gives the headliner a 3D appearance. To finish, 162 delicate petals made of fine glass organza petals, were painstakingly applied by hand for nearly 300 hours. Additionally, nearly 200 sparkling fiber-optic stars were also positioned by hand to create a sense of movement, totaling nearly 700 collective man-hours.
The Water Weaving motif continues to be seen in the Gallery, which spans the width of the Phantom’s fascia. Blending traditional haute couture methods with creative visual design, this extraordinarily expressive creation includes an additional 85 petals that were meticulously hand affixed by the Iris van Herpen team at Goodwood, requiring nearly 60 hours of meticulous work.
Also in the Gallery, the Phantom Syntopia is equipped with Magic Gray leather seats at the front, and at the rear are upholstered in a silk blend fabric specially designed for the vehicle. This is a tribute to the history of Rolls-Royce, where the driver’s seat was usually covered with durable leather, while the rear compartment was trimmed with comfortable and luxurious fabrics.
Speaking further about the Phantom Syntopia and this collaboration with Iris van Herpen, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: “The Phantom Syntopia is the most ambitious, singular and highly Bespoke Phantom we have ever built, and a clear statement about Rolls-Royce’s position as a true luxury home. Building on two decades of partnerships with the world’s most renowned design houses, artists, horologists and jewelers, Phantom Syntopia has secured Phantom’s position as the ultimate blank canvas for Bespoke personalization. Collaborating with internationally renowned designer and Haute Couturière Iris van Herpen, we are once again redefining the boundaries of Bespoke innovation, craftsmanship and possibility; not just for cars but across the wider luxury sector.”
