Ford revealed the new generation Mustang last September, the nameplate seventh iteration we’ll see in showrooms this summer as the 2024 model.
The first examples, whose VIN ended in 001, were going on sale much earlier. Ford on Monday confirmed rights to the car—which hasn’t actually been built yet—to be sold at a Barrett-Jackson auction scheduled for January 28 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
All proceeds will go to JDRF, a charity that supports the fight against diabetes. This will be the third time Ford has offered the rights to a first example of the new Mustang generation via a charity auction. The automaker has also sold off the rights to the first examples of special edition Mustangs such as the new Shelby GT500, the Mach 1, and the Bullitt. It’s not uncommon for bids to enter seven-figure territory during such sales.
The first confirmed example of a seventh generation Mustang is the Mustang GT. This means lucky buyers will receive a car equipped with a 5.0-liter V-8 tuned to produce 480 hp in standard form or 486 hp with the active exhaust option available. The exhaust is part of the Performance Pack which also adds Recaro seats. Buyers can also choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic.

Other Mustangs that will be available at market launch this summer are the 315-hp Mustang EcoBoost and the new Mustang Dark Horse. The Dark Horse shares the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8 but gets 500-hp.
The Dark Horse is actually not a single model but a new performance series. In addition to the regular Dark Horse which is track focused but street legal, there will also be a track-only Dark Horse S and a race-ready Dark Horse R. Ford has yet to provide specifications or a timeline for this track-specific variant.
