BMW is working on a redesign for the X2 compact crossover, and the automaker on Wednesday confirmed its next-generation lineup will include the iX2 electric option.
The redesigned X2 will launch at the end of the year, meaning we should see it arrive as a 2024 model. The iX2 is confirmed to come alongside the regular model.
The prototype for the new X2 exhibits a more coupe-like shape than the current generation, whose roofline is somewhat flat.
The news about the iX2 shouldn’t come as a big surprise as the redesigned X2 is closely related to the redesigned X1 launching for 2023, and includes the iX1’s own electric option. Vehicles use the BMW Group’s FAAR platform designed for compact cars and crossovers, and are capable of supporting gas, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.

Expect the iX2 to live up to the iX1’s specs, meaning a 64.7-kwh battery and a dual-motor powertrain with 308 hp. There will probably also be a single motor setup at some point.
BMW estimates a range of 250 miles for the iX1, and iX2 buyers can expect something similar.
The iX1 hasn’t been confirmed for sale in the US and there’s also no confirmation that the iX2 will be coming here.
BMW on Wednesday also confirmed the arrival of a redesigned 5 Series complete with an electric i5 option in October. The i5 is also confirmed to spawn the i5 Touring electric wagon next spring.
