Production and deliveries of the Ford F-150 Lightning have been halted, although sales are continuing.
On Tuesday, Ford spokeswoman Emma Bergg confirmed to Green Car Reports that stop-build and in-transit stop-ship orders had been placed for the F-150 Lightning pickup truck due to potential battery issues.
Ford has not disclosed what the potential battery issues are at the time of publication.
Discovered during Ford’s pre-shipment quality inspections, this issue can affect trucks in production and those on their way to dealers. The automaker is not aware of any incidents or problems related to the customer’s trucks at this time.
Ford has yet to issue a stop-sale and Bergg confirmed that the Lightnings are already in dealerships awaiting deliveries to customers as scheduled.
Bergg said the engineering team is currently establishing the root cause of the potential issue, and a timeline has not been given for when the stop-build and in-transit stop-ship orders will be cancelled.
“It depends on how long it takes to do a root cause analysis,” says Bergg.
The Ford F-150 Lightning has been named Best Car To Buy 2023 by Green Car Reports for its transformative effect on the pickup truck and electric car markets.
Ford’s electric pickup truck has received three hefty price hikes since going on sale less than a year ago. The current base price of $57,869 is almost 40% higher than the original price.
On Monday Ford announced a new battery factory, which is set to play a key role in making car EVs affordable. Part of that announcement includes the transition to LFP batteries for some future F-150 Lightning models.
