Porsche is all about the driving experience, but there are times when even a Porsche owner wants to leave the driving duties to the vehicle, such as in heavy traffic or during a boring commute.
Porsche understands this, and that’s why the automaker is planning highly automated driver assistance technology for future models. In an announcement on Tuesday, Porsche said it plans to integrate Intel Mobileye’s SuperVision automated driver assistance system in its cars.
“There are certain aspects of partially automated driving that we are interested in,” said Michael Steiner, Porsche’s head of R&D, in a statement. “Smart systems like Mobileye SuperVision technology can help drivers in everyday situations, for example by not having to hold the wheel all the time in traffic jams.”
Mobileye is a major supplier of camera-based sensor technology to OEMs, including parent Volkswagen Group Porsche, and in recent years the company has developed its own driver assistance systems. Mobileye’s most advanced system is SuperVision, which Porsche says will be tuned for the vehicle.
SuperVision can handle a variety of road and traffic situations in hands-free mode, but still requires the driver to be monitoring the road at all times and ready to take action if necessary. This means it is still rated Level 2 on the SAE self-driving ability scale. Level 3 is the first level where the experience is hands and eyes free.
Special SuperVision functions include the car’s ability to follow driver-selected navigation routes, change lanes, and pass slower moving vehicles on multi-lane roads. SuperVision can also handle certain parking situations. This system relies on 11 cameras and multiple radar sensors, as well as a very detailed map. All data is processed with Mobileye’s proprietary system-on-chip computer and AI technology.
Porsche hasn’t mentioned what functions SuperVision will have in its car. The automaker also hasn’t said when SuperVision will be available or what vehicles will use it.
