Pagani Utopia delivers art in motion

The Pagani Utopia launched last fall as the successor to the Huayra, and a new video gives us a chance to see Pagani’s newest hypercar in action.

The short video released by Pagani shows Utopia drifting along country roads and navigating narrow European city streets. There’s no high-speed driving featured, but you can admire the Utopia’s clean bodywork.

With Utopia, Pagani aims to minimize visible cooling ducts and aid aerodynamics to keep the exterior as smooth as possible. A front splitter sends air into the ovoid opening at the front, which then funnels it around the sides of the car to active flaps at the rear. Pagani says this setup achieves optimal aerodynamic balance without sensitivity to ground clearance for more predictable handling characteristics.

The Utopia also carries some styling features from Huayra and Pagani’s first supercar, the Zonda. The forward cab silhouette, quad headlamps (in a solid aluminum housing), and central quad exhaust tips give the Utopia a family resemblance to previous cars.

Another relationship with previous Paganis is the engine. Like the Huayra and Zonda, Utopia uses the Mercedes-Benz AMG V-12. In this case, it’s a 6.0-liter twin-turbo engine making 852 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque, with a redline of 6,700 rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed Xtrac automatic manual transmission, with a conventional manual transmission that will be available at a later date. Pagani did consider both electric and hybrid powertrains, but has ruled them out for now.

Pagani plans to build the 99 Utopia coupe for an undisclosed price, but those possibilities are just the beginning. If Pagani follows the same pattern as the Zonda and Huayra, you can expect the Utopia roadster and several special edition and hardcore track versions to follow. For now, the Utopia coupe carries on the Pagani tradition of stunning design and pure V-12 power.
