Audi will introduce more than 20 new or updated vehicles by the end of 2025, starting with the new Q6 E-tron electric compact crossover slated for the second half of 2023.
More than half of new vehicles will be electric by then, and Audi plans to revise its naming strategy to ensure customers are clear on which models feature an electric powertrain and which models still have internal combustion engines.
In a presentation on Thursday outlining Audi’s 2022 financial results, Audi CEO Markus Duesmann said the revised naming strategy would see Audi EVs carry even numbers in their names and pure ICE and plug-in hybrid models carry odd numbers in their names. .
He said the transition started with the renaming of last year’s E-Tron to the Q8 E-Tron after a mid-cycle update of the electric SUV. This means the current gas-powered Q8 SUV will probably be renamed the Q9 after undergoing its own mid-cycle update later this year.

Similarly, Audi’s upcoming redesign of the A4 will reportedly switch to the A5 name, with the electric A4 E-Tron to be introduced soon after.
Ultimately, Audi’s EVs will also use odd numbers in their names as the automaker hopes to sell EVs exclusively around 2033. Audi has confirmed that its last vehicle equipped with an internal combustion engine will be launched in 2026.
During the same presentation, Duesmann also confirmed plans for an EV positioned under the current E-Tron Q4. It’s unclear whether the model he’s referring to is the A4 E-Tron or something smaller like the A2 E-Tron.
