The Mercedes-Benz AMG One hypercar just set a new lap record for a production car at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, home of the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
With racer Maro Engel behind the wheel, The One recorded a time of 1:43.902. According to Mercedes, the time beat the previous record by a full 12 seconds, which is very impressive for a track that is 3.6 miles long.
Mercedes did not say which car had previously held the record, although it is suspected to be the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
This is One’s second record for the famous racetrack. Last November Engel drove the One around the Nürburgring in a time of 6:35.183. That time is roughly 8.4 seconds quicker than the previous record, which was set by AMG’s GT Black Series in 2020.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG One is manufactured in Coventry, England
Mercedes plans to build just 275 examples of the One. Deliveries have already started, with the first one going to a customer in Germany in January.
Although many build slots were awarded to customers in the US, AMG was unable to certify its finicky F1 cars and engines for sale here without a substantial loss in performance, and so would not sell them here. However, there is some expectation for US customers to accept homeland delivery in the form of Show or Display rules.
The car’s hybrid powertrain consists of a V-6 and a trio of electric motors. The V-6 is the same 1.6-liter turbo V-6 from Mercedes’ championship-winning race car from the 2015 Formula 1 season. But the One’s powertrain is actually more sophisticated than an F1 car. While the race car only had a V-6 and a motor generator driving the rear wheels, the One had two additional motor generators. This drives each of the front wheels and gives the car all-wheel drive. Peak output is 1,049 hp, although the car is relatively heavy for a two-seater, weighing 3,737 pounds.
Performance was resounding, as estimates included a 0-62 mph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed capped at 219 mph, likely due to aerodynamics.
