Special drives require special solutions. This is definitely the case with all-electric vehicles. LIQUI MOLY expanded its range from the start to include products for pure electric vehicles. The latest product development in this series is Battery Coolant EV 200, which was launched by the automotive chemistry specialist from Germany.

LIQUI MOLY is primarily known for its motor oils and additives. They make an important contribution to the operational reliability of the vehicle. This is the main task of the product for the electrically driven variant. The new Battery Coolant EV 200, where EV stands for Electric Vehicle, fulfills an important purpose, says LIQUI MOLY: It acts as a thermal manager. This is necessary because electric and hybrid vehicle technologies only function optimally at certain window temperatures. The range between 15 °C and 40 °C is ideal for lithium-ion batteries.

“Thermal management is very important, because it impacts range,” said David Kaiser, head of Research and Development at LIQUI MOLY. The range of vehicles depends on their energy consumption. And temperature affects battery and engine life.

For this reason, the temperature of the battery must be kept constant. Depending on the outside climate, it is cooled or heated. With a thermal management system, a distinction is made between direct and indirect battery cooling. This indirect system is more complex, but necessary, as the vehicle battery becomes more powerful and therefore significantly hotter.

For indirect cooling in this battery segment, such as models from Hyundai and Kia, for example, a special liquid is required, such as what is now offered by LIQUI MOLY. This ensures that the battery never gets hotter than 60 °C in summer and that temperatures stay within the ideal range between 15 °C and 40 °C, even in winter.

For LIQUI MOLY, this new product is further proof of its innovative expertise in the electricity sector. “The development effort was worthwhile,” Kaiser said. This supports low conductivity over the life of the fluid, long term stability and excellent corrosion protection. “Hybrid Additive was our first product for e-mobility several years ago. Our product range always supports the process of technological transformation. Our slogan ‘Everything that drives works better with LIQUI MOLY’ now includes e-vehicles.”
