Sao Paulo, Brazil, March 25 – Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) leads a one-two-three for Jaguar powertrains, with Nick Cassidy (Imagine Racing) and Sam Bird (Jaguar TCS Racing) crossed the line together. The three finished just half a second apart to seal a stunning inaugural Julius Baer Sao Paulo E-Prix in front of more than 23,000 passionate motorsport fans.
It was a flat push to the finish on a brisk 11 laps Sao Paulo Street Circuit, with Evans (below) managing to navigate through the constant position changes through the pack to take the first of the three checkered flags on the grid. The New Zealander took the initiative and took the lead from compatriot Cassidy as the race headed into the extra lap after several safety car incidents.

His move on Lap 32 proved decisive, with neither Cassidy nor Evans’ teammate Bird able to overturn the leader’s defensive style – although Bird had accumulated a few extra percentage points of usable energy during his climb from 10th on the grid at the start. . Cassidy has led the race more than once but will be more than content to score three successive podiums for the first time in his Formula E career.
Defending world champion Stoffel Vandoorne (DS PENSKE) started at Pole Position Julius Baer and led from the start, parrying Antonio Felix da Costa (TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team) during the first round of ATTACK MODE activation until the race reaches the halfway stage.
The lead was nearly impossible to track on Lap 14 with three or four changes during the tour itself and Cassidy came out victorious.
But Vandoorne would end up in sixth after struggling for any usable energy from his time up front. Da Costa slipped to fourth and briefly made designs on the podium but eventually settled outside of the podium positions. Jean-Eric Vergne (DS PENSKE) led his teammates home for fifth place.
standings leader Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team) did it all from 18th on the grid and broke through to 7th in the checkered flag with Jake Hughes (McLarenne NEOM Formula E Team) finished eighth, just ahead of his teammate Rene Rast in the ninth and with Sebastien Buemi (Envision Racing) rounded out the top 10. Meanwhile, Jaka Dennis (Avalanche Andretti Formula E) suffered another non-finish after contact from And TicktumNIO 333 sees its 99X Electric pushed into the Porsche Wehrlein.
Wehrlein defended it Drivers World Championship leads Dennis 86pts by 62pts, while Cassidy moves into third just one point behind the Brit. Porsche TAG Heuer Formula E Team leads Envision Racing 144pts to 103pts with Jaguar TCS Racing third in 83 points.

Mitch Evans, No. 9, Jaguar TCS Racing, said, “This has come at the right time. We had a tough start but the car was fast so to end up getting the win and some points was amazing. Jaguars 1-2-3. Nick pushed me all the way – we pushed each other – both teams did brilliantly. It’s because a lot of hard work, there’s a lot of corruption done with the simulation, to try and unify this race in terms of strategy isn’t easy. I don’t want to get any closer than that.
“We are obviously thinking about track position and where you want to be at certain phases of the race. I had a good energy lead early on, but it was just about trying to find the right time to use the energy advantage. I think I might have gone too early, once Nick was behind me he could muster the energy and he could stay on my feet but we got the win so we obviously did the right job. So happy to get some big points on the board.
Nick Cassidy, No. 37, Envision Racing, followed by, “I’m very happy with the podium today, with a race like that you can’t be unhappy right – it’s Formula E at its best, it’s a lot of fun in the car, I hope it’s a good watch. Very strategic, Sam does a great job too. 1-2-3 Jaguar, pretty cool. I know [how much energy Sam Bird had], that’s plenty of reasons to get Mitch to move on. I knew getting the win was going to be tough and I had to do something special on Mitch to turn that around, but I was at high risk of finishing third.
“We all want to win, I tried my best to win. But that’s how the cake crumbled, and I think we got one of the best results.

I’m not sure if it’s been done before so hats off to everyone here and back on base, it’s a brilliant result. I’m really excited for the team and for myself. I was a bit disappointed that I came back into the lead with 2% more energy but I had the impact of India going through my head so I was thinking of staying and not doing anything silly and just bringing home the points I think I got too fastest lap. It’s a good point for the team, we’re off to Berlin.”
German was the next stop at the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for Rounds 7 and 8 and SABIC E-Prix Berlin 2023 double header on April 22 and April 23.
