The Motor Industry Institute (IMI) said it could not support a move to change the frequency of car first MoTs from the current three years to four years.
The move was proposed by the government in an effort to help consumers save money in a cost of living crisis.
It has also been argued that EVs with fewer moving parts are inherently more reliable than ICE vehicles.
In The Future of MoTs, IMI’s response to the Ministry of Transport Consultation, stated:
“IMI is unable to support the transition to 4.1.1 at this time. It is the Institute’s position that existing 3.1.1 is maintained until sufficient evidence exists that electric vehicles have not failed MOT tests of significant hazardous defects to a greater extent than petrol cars.
“Possible misunderstandings in technology differences lead to increased EV failure rates.
“Therefore, IMI further recommends that education is urgently needed to reduce this failure rate and subsequent threats to road safety.”
