The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is calling for clarification of the UK’s new Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order (MVBEO).
He wants the order to ensure that consumers are given clear information about their freedom to choose who repairs their vehicles and are not harmed financially by the new regulations.
Stuart James, chief executive of IGA, said “There are some areas that could hurt consumers unless further clarification is made.
“Of particular concern is the lack of in-vehicle messaging requirements to let customers know they have an alternative solution to serving through an independent operator.
“We would also like to see a requirement for authorized repair shops to explain to consumers that they can choose who repairs, maintains and repairs their vehicle without voiding the warranty.
“In addition, MVBEO does not refer to mechanisms for independent operators to access security-related information for remedies. While we understand access to such sensitive information requires an element of control, it is critical that a recognized system is in place for the vetted business or individual to provide this service to consumers to ensure fair competition and timely access to vehicle repairs.
“As the voice of the UK’s independent garage sector, the IGA has responded to MVBEO’s technical consultations with a comprehensive set of recommendations and will continue to provide feedback every step of the way to ensure that MVBEO protects freedom of choice and fair competition for UK motorists. .”
