Generally there are 6 main components used to make a high quality Coil on Plug.
1-100% pure copper wire.

3-Epoxy is used to insulate the primary and secondary coils
The housing contains 4-PBT poly glass to protect the internal windings from excessive heat and vibration.
5-stainless steel resistive contact spring.
6- Dielectric and high temperature resistant silicone boot
Let’s start with the internal primary & secondary windings.
All copper wire wrapped around each United Motor Products ignition coil is made with pure copper. Using virgin copper wire virtually eliminates the porosity in the extruded wire. This in turn, creates a consistent flow of current which leads to a hotter spark for more complete combustion of the fuel.
The inferior coil is made with recycled copper which contains impurities that cause “porosity pockets” along the wire. When voltage flows through the copper, “porosity pockets” create resistance in the flow of current which then create “hot spots” in the windings which cause the insulation to break down. This is the main cause of premature coil failure. This will cause a P0301 to P0312 misfire code.
The second component of the coil is the EPOXY RESIN.
Only the highest quality epoxy resins suitable for ISO and TS certification are used in United Motor Products coils. The use of high-quality resin helps heat dissipation, moisture resistance, high dielectric strength and anti-vibration fatigue. United Motor Products fills and cures the coils in a vacuum. With the copper wire coated and the epoxy filler in a vacuum, the space between the copper windings is free of voids.
This means increased thermal shock cycle resistance, superior electrical insulation and higher resistance to cracking and fracturing. The superior epoxy also creates a lower coefficient of thermal expansion, resulting in longer coil life.
The third component is the PBT greenhouse.
PBT glass filler polymer is used for all coil housings. PBT is a high impact, high dielectric strength polymer, which also improves thermal stress properties over base plastics. PBT materials retain their dielectric properties even with a lifetime of thermal shock events from atmospheric and driving conditions.
Constant vibration in the motor can also create a severe environment which can lead to coil housing failure. By using glass-filled PBT material, the integrity of the housing is maintained after years of severe driving conditions.
The fourth component is a stainless steel wound contact spring.
It is engineered from stainless steel. This ensures the correct electrical resistance is formed to absorb the RFI emission created at the spring and spark plug connection point.
Some designs require additional resistance by adding a ferrite ferrule contained within the spring to increase RFI and EMI absorption.
The fifth component is the silicone spark plug boot.
Only the highest quality high heat silicone polymer is used in all coil boots. The use of a high dielectric polymer to make the coil boot, provides a superior dielectric barrier preventing voltage leakage. They also protect against premature degradation of the boot which can lead to failure and dielectric leakage.
The spring and spark plug contact point is where the most heat is generated and the highest dielectric failure occurs.
