The UK government has unveiled a proposal for a zero emission vehicle mandate.
Starting next year, a minimum annual target will be set for the percentage of new car and van sales that must be zero emissions.
The plan supports the Government’s commitment to end sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, and from 2035 all new cars and vans must be completely emission free.
Between 2030 and 2034 all new vehicles must be either completely zero-emissions or able to cover a significant distance with zero emissions.
The government has also launched a £381 million Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund along with an additional £15 million for the On-Street Residential Charging Scheme (ORCS).
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: “Transport is one of the most important sectors to reach net zero by 2050, so we must accelerate our efforts to decarbonize how people get from A to B while growing our economy and supporting thousands of green jobs.
“From expanding charging networks to increasing the production of cleaner aviation fuels, today’s announcement is a great step forward – offering people more choices for how to stay connected while delivering the carbon reductions needed to achieve net zero.”
The government has said the new measures to support producers will give them flexibility through a credit-based trading system, allowing them to save credits in years when they exceed annual targets to use them in future years or trade them with other producers that fail.
If manufacturers do not meet their annual targets, they could face a possible fine of up to £18,000 for each vehicle that misses its target.
Minister for Technology and Decarbonization Jesse Norman said: “As today’s announcement shows, the Government is doing more than ever to help the UK move from petrol and diesel to electric vehicles.
“That means investing in charging infrastructure and providing clear directions to manufacturers so they can roll out new electric vehicles more quickly and efficiently. Overall, the UK leads the way in decarbonizing transport, a sector which is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases.”
