The six-month extension of the government’s MOT due date in March 2020 has had a “huge impact” on the accuracy of dealers’ after-sales records across the UK.
That’s the view of Marketing Delivery, which examined 150,000 customer vehicle records held by 100 dealers and found that 41% of MOT due dates were correct.
In March 2020, the UK government extended the renewal date by six months for any MOT ending between 30 March and 31 July 2020, to ensure consumers are not forced to visit repair shops during the Covid-19 lockdown.
However, riders are then free to order at MOT before the new expiration date, and there has been a significant rearrangement of millions of test cycles.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has reported that around five million tests were postponed, as 2.1 million MOTs were conducted in April and May 2020 compared to 7.1 million during the same period in 2019.
Marketing Delivery drives its VoiceBox system, which can access DVSA records to retrieve the correct MOT date and via Keyloop integration automatically uploads them to the dealership management system, offering significant time savings for the data administration team.
VoiceBox can then be used to send automated SMS and emails to subscribers to remind them when their MOT and/or service is due.
There is also a facility to ensure messages are not sent to customers who are no longer registered as vehicle owners.
Through the Keyloop integration, customers will receive communications with the correct MOT date meaning more relevant to individuals. Messages are fully GDPR compliant and can be easily sidelined.
“Maintaining the accuracy of Ministry of Transportation data is always a challenge; it got a lot worse with auto-renewal,” explains Managing Director Marketing Delivery, Jeremy Evans. The extension raises questions about a large number of MOT records, and many dealers have yet to follow through.
