GMC announced Thursday that it is working with EarthCruiser Overland Vehicles to overload the GMC Hummer EV concept due in late summer 2023 and preview a production version.
The concept will be the first product from a partnership that the company says will result in the development of a “high-end, no-compromise adventure vehicle” that leverages EarthCruiser engineering technology, according to the company.
Overlanding is a combination of off-road adventures, off-the-grid vehicle camping along the way, and a do-it-yourself ethos. In recent years it’s evolved into something closer to a market segment and more gear focused.

The concept is based on the GMC Hummer EV SUV, and while the dark and fuzzy but sharp teaser shot doesn’t show much yet, it’s clear to see that the roof is covered with solar cells. With that said, don’t be surprised if the concept of overload takes the Hummer EV’s vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities to the next level — perhaps with the ability to determine which part of the battery pack capacity is used for driving and which part. go towards powering the rest of the lifestyle.
If such a concept moves forward to production, GMC may be on the cutting edge in offering a truck that lifts like a factory assembly.

The Hummer EV weighs over 9,000 pounds in pickup truck form and is nearly as heavy as an SUV, so it can never be tread lightly. But for those using a large vehicle as a base for an overloaded rig, versus a diesel, for example, it may be an eco-friendly option.

GMC points to more than a century of professional-grade trucks and sees them as part of the brand’s vision for the future. “EarthCruiser products have proven their performance in environments around the world and we are excited to join them in their next chapter of adventure and exploration,” said GM executive engineer Josh Tavel in a company release about the project.
GM’s truck brand hasn’t said how the new version will be made available, but did mention its own AT4 off-road sub-brand. Between the Hummer EV (SUT) pickup truck, Hummer EV SUV, and the upcoming Sierra EV Denali electric pickup, it will soon have three different all-electric trucks in the lineup — so expect this overloaded concept to be one of its many styling extensions. life has not yet come.
