The superior sensing capabilities of lidar over cameras and radar allow the technology to enhance driver assistance systems, and are generally considered essential for self-driving cars. It now appears that General Motors is developing its own lidar system.
GM’s patent application titled “Lidar Vision System” was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on February 28, although it was originally filed on December 12, 2019. In the document, GM claims an increase in range over current lidar sensors.
Lidar relies on light waves projected from sensors and reflected from nearby objects. The pattern in which light is scattered or returned to the sensor allows the system to determine the shape of objects and their distance. In the automotive industry, lidar generally works in conjunction with radar and cameras to help autonomous cars and driver assistance systems “see” their surroundings.
GM notes in the document that the lidar unit may have difficulty detecting objects beyond a certain range of the vehicle. The document describes compensating for this with lens assemblies around the sensor, with each lens angled to capture more light.

While Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims lidar is a waste of money, other automakers have started adding it to production vehicles. The China-market Xpeng P5 electric sedan is claimed by its makers to be the first car to be sold with built-in lidar when it launches in 2021. The P5 uses two lidar sensors, one positioned on either side of the front fascia, to detect obstacles as part of a suite of driver-assist technologies.
Mercedes-Benz and Volvo have invested in Silicon Valley company Luminar, and plan to use the company’s lidar sensors in future vehicles. Volvo is integrating lidar sensors into the roof of the vehicle, starting with the 2024 EX90 electric SUV, which will start shipping early next year. GM has also confirmed that lidar will be present in its vehicles starting with the 2024 Cadillac Celestiq, although initially the lidar will be sourced from suppliers. Reception.
