Ford last week posted a teaser video to social media showing the Mustang-based drag racer that will be revealed on April 13.

A sticker on the back reveals it to be a Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, and the sound of the vehicle indicates that the powertrain is electric. Ford also includes an “enhanced” tag next to the video in social media posts.

Clues point to a more powerful successor to the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 launched in 2020. The car is a one-off prototype to explore the potential of electric powertrains in the world of drag racing. It develops 1,502 peak hp at the wheels, or enough to rocket the car down a quarter mile in 8.27 seconds at 168 mph.

Ford has since unveiled a redesigned Mustang, and it looks like the new car is getting its own electric drag racer. Considering Ford is calling the new Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 drag racer, we’re likely looking at 1800 hp or so.

Ford is working with NHRA organizers to identify ways to introduce electrification to professional drag racing. Given the performance shown by the previous Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, we believe it is only a matter of time.

Ford isn’t the only automaker exploring electric dragsters. In 2019, Chevrolet’s eCOPO Camaro was close to a 9 on its way and its performance potential was never really tapped. Let the electric drag wars begin.
