Ferrari in Italy has been hit hard by ransom demands following a cyber attack, which released customer data.
The group immediately contacted customers to inform them of the attack and the threat that some data had been leaked.
A statement said: “Ferrari SpA was recently contacted by a threat actor with a ransom request linked to certain client contact details.
“After receiving the ransom request, we immediately started an investigation in collaboration with a reputable third-party cybersecurity company. In addition, we notified the relevant authorities and are confident that they will fully investigate within the law.
“As a matter of policy, Ferrari will not be held for ransom because paying such demands finances criminal activity and enables threat actors to perpetuate their attacks.
“Instead, we believe the best course of action is to notify our clients and we have therefore informed our customers of the potential data exposure and the nature of the incident.
The sports car maker is working with third-party experts to harden the system and says it is now confident of its durability.
“We can also confirm that the breach had no impact on our company’s operational functions,” it said.
In the UK dealer group, Pendragon and Arnold have become targets of cyber crime. According to SonicWall Threat’s 2023 cybersecurity report, the UK is the 2nd most attacked country in the world, after the US. It said last year’s ransomware attacks doubled.
