As more battery electric vehicle (BEV) models become available for purchase, owner satisfaction with their overall experience shifts to more traditional factors such as quality and style. According to JD Power’s recent 2023 US Electric Vehicle Ownership Experience (EVX) Study, the shift is most evident in the respective awardees of the premium and mass market segments, Rivian R1T and MINI Cooper Electric.
In its first year of eligibility, the Rivian R1T ranked highest overall with a satisfaction score of 794 (on a 1,000-point scale), according to JD Power. Owners have a high level of satisfaction with driving pleasure and interior/exterior styling factors. The MINI Cooper Electric ranks highest in the mass market segment with a score of 782, supported by the highest satisfaction score of all EV models in index, quality and reliability factors with the highest weight of the study.
“The electric vehicle landscape is changing rapidly, and newer models are bringing in more mainstream and first-time EV buyers,” said Brent Gruber, executive director of EV practice at JD Power. “Recent vehicle releases from both new brands and traditional automakers have a big influence on what factors matter most in the ownership experience. Today’s EV owners are looking for quality, reliability, driving pleasure, safety and technology features.”
JD Power summarizes the main findings from the 2023 study:
-Rivian R1T Highest and highest overall rating in the premium BEV segment with a score of 794. Tesla Model 3 (759) ranks second.
-MINI Cooper Electric is ranked highest in the mass market BEV segment with a score of 782. Kia EV6 (762) ranks second and Ford Mustang Mach-E (742) ranks third.
-The number of award-eligible models in the premium segment has grown from four to five year-over-year, while award-eligible mass-market models have almost doubled (from six to 10). Satisfaction among premium EV owners averaged 756, while satisfaction among mass-market EV owners averaged 730.
The US Electric Vehicle Ownership Experience Study (EVX), now in its third year, implemented a methodological change for 2023 by narrowing the satisfaction index to focus on the first year of ownership, said JD Power. The EVX ownership index score as a whole measures the satisfaction of electric vehicle owners in the premium and mass market segments. The 2023 study includes 10 factors (in alphabetical order): accuracy of stated battery ranges; availability of public charging stations; battery range; cost of ownership; driving pleasure; easy charging at home; interior and exterior style; safety features and technology; service experience; and vehicle quality and reliability.
