The Honda Civic Type R recently claimed the Nurburgring lap record for a front-wheel drive car. Well, like most recordings running lately, this one too is likely to generate some controversy.
Honda released an onboard video of the footage, complete with a clear view of the vehicle’s instrument cluster. So obviously, they have nothing to hide. Even so, experts are now starting to weigh in, casting doubt on whether the car used for the record had a spare engine.
Misha Charoudin, who surely knows a thing or two about the Nordschleife, has shared a video that compares the stats of the two stock Civic Type Rs on the same part of the track. The video highlights the car speed, engine RPM, turbo boost pressure etc. As you will notice, there is a considerable difference with the car used for recording.
Honda states that they have removed the air conditioning, electric mirrors and parking sensors to reduce the overall weight of the Civic Type R. However, Honda may also make some modifications under the hood. Misha suspects the car may be running at higher boost pressures and appears to have a shorter final drive.
