Dealers are being warned that 2023 could see record levels of cybercrime as the cost of living crisis deepens.
Mad Devs has advised dealers to be vigilant and work closely with their suppliers to ensure that safety measures are implemented and followed.
A recent study by security experts CyberEdge found that in the UK, 81.4% of organizations had experienced at least one cyber attack in the year prior to the survey, compared to 71.1% in the previous year’s findings.
The 2022 Cybersecurity Breach Survey, published by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, found that the most common threat was phishing attempts, which 83% of companies reporting a breach experienced.
David Boyce, CEO of Mad Devs, said: “The cost of living crisis is driving an increase in cyber attacks on UK businesses. Dealers face a myriad of dangers, with ransomware attacks, data breaches and online fraud all having the potential to significantly impact operations. We advise the industry to act by contacting their supply chain partners to assess what security measures they have in place and understand what steps are being taken to continue to improve security.”
Reports in January highlighted the dangers when Arnold Clark suffered a cyber attack over Christmas, leading retailers to temporarily suspend internet access to protect customer data.
Boyce concluded: “With the challenges of increasing business costs, there is always a temptation to find cost savings in cybersecurity. But cutting corners in this area is a false economy and can have far-reaching implications for business continuity.”
