Muntinglupa City, January – In tune with Hondaglobal commitment to leading the advancement of mobility, Honda Philippines Automobile, Inc. (HCPI) welcomes 2023 with the local debut of its high-performance icon, the 6th Generation Honda Civic Type R which is by far the most powerful model in the Type R’s 30-year history. Honda’s latest halo model embodies the brand’s challenging spirit with the latest innovations that are sure to provide a thrilling driving experience.
Exterior design that combines function and form
The sporty look of the All-New Civic Type R stands to serve a purpose. Designed with input from aerodynamic development members HRC Sakura Super GT racing team, the 6th generation model is more aerodynamically efficient, therefore generating more significant downforce which improves high-speed stability. Based on the Civic Hatchback, it features new bumpers that reduce side wake, functional front fender air outlets, and side sill garnishes that improve efficiency, contributing to a lower overall drag coefficient.
Compared to its predecessor, the All New Honda Civic Type R is 0.8 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and 0.5 inches lower. The A-pillars have been pulled back 1.96 inches for increased visibility. This also gives the sports hatch a more elongated bonnet which improves its overall demeanor. Along with that, the all-new model features a more aggressive front bumper design with a sporty honeycomb grille that echoes the intricate honeycomb trim in the cabin. A more aggressive stance is accentuated by a wider tailgate and a reshaped rear bumper featuring updated three-turn exhaust outlets. You’re also greeted with a redesigned rear spoiler with aluminum stanchions and a new rear diffuser that increases downforce and reduces drag.
Other notable exterior features of the Civic Type R include redesigned LED headlights and LED taillights, 19-inch Matte Black alloy wheels wrapped in 265/30 high-performance tires, rear door spoiler, tri-tip exhaust pipe diffuser, and the Type R badge found on the front grille and rear doors along with the red Honda logo. The 2023 Civic Type R will be available in two colors. This includes the return of the iconic racing heritage colors, white Championship, together Blue Pearl Race.
The All-New Civic Type R combines class-ready performance with a sleeker, more sophisticated look that beautifully blends advanced aerodynamics for a powerful low and wide body. Its muscular exterior is more aerodynamically efficient, generating significantly more downforce to improve high-speed stability. A better power-to-weight ratio has also been achieved all thanks to the use of a lightweight resin.
Be in control with its immersive cab
Step inside and take sportiness and refinement to a whole new level. The All-New Civic Type R’s cab is designed to support an intense driving experience that elevates driving pleasure with emotional, performance-focused details. Interior ergonomics was developed based on two core principles including “instant recognition” and “intuitive operation”. It combines easy-to-understand information with natural feeling controls that provide ultimate pleasure to the driver.
It shares a familiar cabin layout with the standard Civic although there are plenty of exclusive and interesting quirks to look out for. For starters, there’s an aluminum shift knob for added sportiness and a Type R beam plate on the dashboard. The overall theme of the interior favors a black and red motif, with red dominating the racing-inspired Type R bucket seats (below) treated to Alcantara, carpeting, and other finishing touches in the cabin.
Storage space is also great in this sports hatchback. It features a new center console with deep and wide cupholders that allow it to accommodate larger bottles and other items. Along with that, visibility has also been improved all thanks to the flat dashboard, retracted A-pillars and low hood, resulting in better horizontal viewing angles compared to the previous Type R.
Changes to the exterior and interior maximize performance and driver engagement. Thinner pillars, outside mirrors moved to the doors and a lowered hood provide significantly better visibility. Blind spots have been minimized and reflective elements reduced. The new lightweight and highly supported front sport seats with suede effect upholstery offer exceptional support and comfort on the track and during long journeys, helping drivers to sharpen their concentration levels.
Technology that brings the best driving pleasure
The 6th generation Honda Civic Type R is equipped with a myriad of technological features. For in-car entertainment, it comes with a 9-inch touch screen that supports various multimedia functions such as Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Enjoy your favorite tunes with the Bose 12-speaker sound system, bringing you a smooth and clear music experience in the cabin. Other creature comforts include a 10.2-inch full-digital instrument cluster, automatic air conditioning, smart entry with smart key card and one push start system, wireless charging pad and more.
Honda LogR Performance Data Logger
Exclusive to the All-New Civic Type R is a new enhanced version of the Honda LogR Performance Datalogger that combines an onboard computer and its sensors with a new built-in vehicle application that helps drivers monitor and record various performance parameters in real-time. while driving on the highway, on the track and other closed paths, helps improve driving skills. The main features are as follows:
- Performance Monitor – provides the driver with vehicle information such as 3D View, Tire Friction Circle, cornering G force, oil and coolant temperature status, oil pressure and more.
- Auto Score – Shows how the car behaves and helps you improve your driving skills. Autoscore measures your driving performance using key driving parameters.
- Data Log – analyzes driving data to help you understand your driving habits. It also rates your track performance, providing lap times and a Heat Map.
Thrilling powertrain for a thrilling ride
Under the hood of this gorgeous monster sits a 2.0 liter, 16 valve, DOHC VTEC, turbocharged inline four cylinder engine that produces 320 PS and 420 Nm torque; power is sent to the front wheels. The factory is then paired with a 6-speed manual transmission with Rev Match Control System, which has been improved over the previous model for more precise and smoother gear shifts on the go.
On top of its thrilling powertrain, the All-New Civic Type R comes with four driving modes: Comfort, Sport, +R and individual a new, driver-customizable mode. Notably, it is the most powerful model in the Type R’s 30-year history.
This is a big step in terms of security
The standard Honda Sensing® suite of driver assistance and safety technologies has been thoroughly re-engineered for the 2023 Civic Type R which incorporates a single camera mounted behind the windshield coupled with an ultra-fast processor and sonar sensor. The new single camera system has a wide field of view twice wide (100 degrees vs. 50 degrees) and can see farther down the road.
Its cameras detect target feature points and recognize object attributes such as vehicles or pedestrians, while the sonar sensor system, on the other hand, detects objects, including other vehicles, located near the front. The fast processor allows the system to measure the distance and lateral position of objects based on changes in the target object’s size, how long it takes for the changes to occur, and vehicle speed. This allows the camera to recognize white lines, road boundaries such as sidewalks, other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and road signs.
With the new mechanism, the system now has a better recognition compared to the previous version. Included Honda SENSE features are as follows:
- Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) – Assists when a possible vehicle collision occurs or when a pedestrian is detected up ahead. CMBS is designed to provide a warning to prevent a potential collision or reduce vehicle speed to reduce the impact of an unavoidable collision.
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – Helps maintain a steady speed at a set distance from the driver from the vehicle in front.
- Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS) – Keeps the vehicle in the middle of the visible lane and in the best driving position while guiding you along the road.
- Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) – RDM helps drivers avoid collisions by providing audio and visual warnings whenever the car turns into another lane without the use of proper signal lights, while LDW or Lane Departure warnings let you know when you go out of lane.
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – This feature operates when the car is traveling at 40 to 90 mph. It is designed to warn the driver if the vehicle leaves the detected lane without activating the turn signal.
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW) – When the system determines the possibility of a collision with the previous vehicle, a visual and audible warning from the FCW system prompts the driver to take corrective action.
- Auto-High Beam (AHB) – this system allows the driver to automatically turn on the high beam when there are no other vehicles ahead and lower the beam appropriately when facing oncoming traffic.
In addition to advanced driver assistance features, the Honda Civic Type R is also equipped with a multi-view rear camera, walk-away auto lock, driver attention monitor, airbags (front, side, side curtain, knee), rear seat reminder, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), ISOFIX Child Seat Anchor, security alarm, and Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with Automatic Brake Hold (ABH) .
The superior safety features of the 6th Generation Honda Civic Type R reflect Honda’s global goal of achieving ‘Safety for Everyone’ when sharing the road. In 2050, the brand envisions zero deaths from traffic collisions involving Honda vehicles, and this must be done through the continuous reinforcement of safety technology in its vehicles.
In line with its global direction, Honda is driven by its desire to expand the potential of people’s lives, this has enabled the Japanese automaker to continue to face challenges to share happiness and joy with customers. Simultaneously, the All-New Civic Type R builds on Honda’s challenging spirit, tapping into its deep roots in competition with racetrack-proven techniques that maximize performance without compromising the Type R’s civilized road manners.
“Tonight, we welcome 2023 with the launch of the most powerful Civic Type R yet. It embodies Honda’s DNA, demonstrating the brand’s strong determination to build machines that achieve top speed and driving pleasure,” said Mr. Masahiko Nakamura, President of Honda Cars Philippines, Inc.
