When installing a new compressor for an air ride system, there are four things you need to pay attention to.
First, check the mount that attaches the compressor to the vehicle. The mounts are designed to isolate vibrations from reaching the driver while the compressor is running. Noise may be a problem as it will be intermittent due to the operation of the compressor. Make sure springs and bushings are in good condition. Second, make sure the hoses that connect to the intake and exhaust ports are clean and not damaged. Dirt and moisture in the inlet can clog the internal filter and contaminate the dryer inside the compressor. Also, some vehicles may have an external filter and dryer assembly that will need to be serviced when the compressor is replaced. The hose for the exhaust port must be safe for the compressor and the vehicle. If the exhaust hose is not installed properly, it may cause excessive noise when the ride height is adjusted.
Third, the outlet on the compressor is usually a push-to-connect or push-on fitting. To remove the plastic cable, unlock the connection using the cable lock and remove the metal or plastic collar and pull the cable like this. Most Wabco compressors include new fittings and plastic lines that connect the compressor to the vehicle. To install new ducts and fittings, press the collars into the fittings and install. Push the line into the fitting until this printed line is flush with the base of the fitting like this. To connect the line to the compressor or vehicle, push it into the fitting until this printed line is flush with the base of the fitting like this. Do not try to cut the line without the appropriate tool. Using the wrong tool can cause leaky connections or introduce system limitations.
Fourth, check the electrical connectors on the vehicle. Since most compressors are mounted to frame rails or near wheel wells, they are exposed to moisture, debris and even road salt. This can cause corrosion inside the electrical connector. This corrosion can cause thermal damage to the connector due to increased resistance in the circuit. If the connector on the vehicle is damaged, have it repaired with a new pigtail harness.
If you take care of these four things when replacing the compressor, you can be sure that when it is turned on, it will be able to produce the necessary pressure and volume for the air suspension to operate like new.
