In the last decade or so, we have seen a number of new technologies in the automotive industry. One of them is the Advanced Driver Assistance System, also known as ADAS. There are a number of systems that fall under the ADAS umbrella. Including blindspot detection, lane keep assist, parallel parking assist, trailer backup assist, adaptive cruise control, and many more.

With all this technology in a modern vehicle, it’s easy to see why some components need to up their game a bit. The ABS speed sensor in particular lacks the precision needed to help this ADAS feature work. The AC Signal generator’s passive sensor is not capable of generating an adequate signal at very low speeds, nor can it indicate which way the wheel is turning.

Consider this, how fast do you think it will be when you try to parallel park? A mile per hour, maybe less? Well, passive wheel speed sensors can’t generate a signal until the wheels are spinning at three to five miles per hour, so it’s easy to see why a different solution was needed.

An active wheel speed sensor functions more like a wheel position sensor than a simple speed sensor. They can generate signals from very low speeds, which makes them a perfect match for ADAS features. Here’s another example. If you are driving a vehicle with hill hold assist, the vehicle will still apply the brakes when you transfer your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.

Now, how does the vehicle know when to release the brakes? You guessed it. The ABS speed sensor is active. When the wheel starts to turn, when you pull on it, the brakes will retract. It’s so seamless that you won’t even notice anything happening. This also helps illustrate the importance of choosing the right sensor for the application. Sometimes this means choosing the right brand.

Let’s take a closer look at the two ABS speed sensors in front of me. Both of these sensors fit into the same vehicle and look very similar on the outside, but that’s where the similarities end. As you can see, the insides are distinctly different and only one appears to be a precision product. This one features some advanced micro sensors. This one is nothing more than a rudimentary pickup. One is shown to detect reverse rotation while the other doesn’t.

So next time you’re looking for a replacement ABS speed sensor, do you really know what’s in the box? Does it have the proper advanced technology? And more importantly, will it work as well as the original in all situations?
