Polestar has joined the ranks of automakers offering coupe-like SUVs with the launch of the Polestar 4 at the 2023 Shanghai auto show this week.

The newcomer sits between the Polestar 2 compact hatch and the mid-size Polestar 3 SUV in terms of size, but in terms of performance, the 4 tops the ladder.

It’s Polestar’s fastest model to date, even surpassing the 619-hp Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid by delivering 0-62 mph acceleration in 3.8 seconds. That’s made possible thanks to a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain that’s good for 536 hp. A more tame version with a single motor will also be offered, aimed at buyers looking for maximum range with maximum performance.

The available Performance Package will add items such as 22-inch wheels, Brembo brakes with 4-piston calipers, a performance-tuned chassis and gold color accents inside and out.

The Polestar 4 uses the SEA modular EV platform from parent company Zhejiang Geely. The platform makes its debut in 2021 in the 001 hatchback from fellow Zhejiang Geely Zeekr brand, and comes with up to 536 hp in that model as well.

The largest battery is the 102-kwh unit, which for the single-motor variant is estimated by Polestar to provide an EPA-rated range of over 300 miles. Other features include a charging capacity of up to 200 kw and two-way charging. A heat pump is also used, enabling the vehicle to utilize ambient heat while preconditioning the cabin and battery.

The exterior design borrows elements from Polestar’s 2020 Precept concept, including the absence of a rear window. Instead, a camera-based system provides the driver with a rear view. Residents need not worry about feeling cramped as a full-length glass roof is standard.

Inside, the design follows Polestar’s signature spartan style. The dashboard is largely featureless other than a pair of displays that act as a digital instrument cluster (10.2 inches) and an infotainment hub (15.4 inches). The infotainment system is powered by Android and offers a number of popular preloaded Google apps. Apple CarPlay and a heads-up display are also included.

Specific details for the US market will be announced in 2024, with the Polestar 4 to be available in local showrooms later that year as a 2025 model. Polestar says it expects an initial price of around $60,000.

Production will be handled at the factory in Hangzhou Bay, China.

Beyond the 4, Polestar will begin sales of the 5 sedan in 2025 and the 6 sports car in 2026. A Polestar 7, with a body style that has yet to be revealed, will arrive in 2027.
