Porsche has given a tantalizing look at the updated Cayenne debuting next week at the 2023 Shanghai auto show.

Sales will follow later this year, with the updated mid-size SUV as a 2024 model.

The update is one of the most significant for an existing model, according to Porsche, and will help keep the vehicle fresh as the fourth-generation, fully-electric Cayenne launches sometime in 2026. Porsche is expected to sell a gas version alongside the electric newcomer. for a short time.

The update will touch several key areas including the powertrain, chassis, exterior styling and cabin. Porsche in March revealed a new interior design, which adopts a fully digital dashboard similar to that used in the Taycan electric car. The current model’s analog gauges are gone, with a 12.7-inch digital instrument cluster replacing these in the updated Cayenne. There is also a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a 10.9-inch screen is available for the front passengers.

As for the exterior, the new teaser shows the headlights with a flatter and angular shape which is also similar to the design used on the Taycan. The headlamps are Porsche’s latest matrix LED design, featuring four individual projectors instead of a single main unit on the current Cayenne range. Porsche says the new headlights provide a more precise light pattern as well as doubling the brightness of the current version.

In the chassis department, Porsche will make adaptive damping a standard feature across the range. Larger diameter tires will also help improve comfort and grip levels.

It’s unclear what updates Porsche is planning for the powertrains, though there are rumors the Cayenne S will drop the current 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 and replace Porsche’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. Typically, Porsche increases horsepower in most grades with its updates, so powertrain tweaks in other grades are also possible.

The current lineup excels with the Turbo S E-Hybrid class, which has 670 hp. While the Cayenne Coupe has a new Turbo GT grade with a twin-turbo V-8 making 631 hp, it’s unclear whether this grade will make its way into the regular Cayenne lineup.

The Cayenne Coupe will also be updated alongside the regular SUV.

The Shanghai auto show starts April 18.
