Mercedes-Benz has seen a test prototype for the EQG, the electric version of the G-Class that will be launched later this year or early next year.
Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius first mentioned plans for an electric G-Class in early 2019. At the time, she said Mercedes had considered discontinuing the G-Class rather than converting it for the electric era, but felt that the last Mercedes would be made. should be an off-roader icon.
A concept version that is considered close to the specifications of the production model will then be launched in 2021. The concept, which also uses the name EQG, features a body-on-frame design like the usual G-Class, and houses a battery inside. frame.
It also features an electric motor that drives each wheel independently, as well as a 2-speed shiftable transmission for reduced off-road driving. Mercedes says the EQG will match the off-road capabilities of the regular G-Class, including the ability to tackle 100% of grades on suitable terrain.

EQG will have new capabilities. Independent control of the four motors means the EQG will be able to spin on the spot, a maneuver known as a tank change. Mercedes calls it the G-Turn and says the feature will be available on the EQG.
On the outside, the concept features illuminated panels instead of a grille, and the design may be making production as engineers have gone to great lengths to cover the grille on visible prototypes being tested.

One element of the concept that looks to be going into production is the rear storage box, which can be seen on the prototype. Sitting in the traditional place for a spare wheel, the storage box likely holds charging equipment.
Mercedes hasn’t said what range it’s expecting, but the company says the battery will feature a high silicon anode material that will help increase energy density.

For those who want an electric G-Class today, Austrian company Kreisel is offering an electric convertible, though so far the company has only shown a convertible version of the previous generation G-Class. The Kreisel arrangement featured an 80-kwh battery and electric motors on each axle to produce a combined 482 hp. One of Kreisel’s G-Class electric convertible customers was Arnold Schwarzenegger.
