Mercedes-Benz released its redesigned 2024 E-Class in April, but it’s still testing the fiery version of the AMG.
Recent spyshots and videos show prototypes for the new mid-size AMG E 53. The new E-Class goes on sale later this year, and an AMG 53 version will follow in early 2024.
Both sedans and wagons are planned, though only the first is expected in the US Surprisingly, a prototype for the new AMG E 63 is yet to be seen, possibly indicating that the nameplate may be removed as AMG focuses on a future electric performance sedan due around 2025.
The combo of performance wheels and tires, as well as large brakes and four round exhaust tips made this prototype the E 53. If the E 63 were launched it would also have four exhaust tips, albeit with a square shape.
What remains unclear are AMG’s powertrain plans for the E 53. Rumors suggest that any of the E 53 and E 63 are running a 4-cylinder engine combined with a powerful plug-in hybrid system, similar to that found in AMG’s C 63 SE Performance.
Even though the number of cylinders is lower, performance should increase thanks to the electrification component. The current E 53 features a 3.0 liter turbo-6 and a mild hybrid setup which is good for 429 hp. The new E 53 can produce close to 500 hp.
Previous reports have indicated that a new E 63 will indeed come, with a 4-cylinder and mild-hybrid setup working in combination with a rear-mounted electric motor. The same setup features in the C 63 SE Performance, producing a combined 671 hp. The E 63 is currently powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine that develops a maximum power of 603 hp.
The new E-Class platform is an updated version of Mercedes’ MRA rear-wheel drive architecture featured in the new S-Class and C-Class. The updated platform benefits from weight savings, primarily through increased use of aluminum over steel, although the addition of any plug-in hybrid technology will likely offset any weight savings.
