Hyundai on Sunday previewed a mid-cycle refresh direction for the midsize Sonata — and Sonata Hybrid — sedan for the 2024 model year, with additional details to be announced on March 30.
Hyundai describes the refresh as “more than a modest facelift for the current generation of midsize sedan Sonata, which arrived in early 2020 in the guise of the Sonata Hybrid, after the somewhat conservatively styled previous-generation Sonata that arrived for 2016.
With this new look, the super-aero look gets a bit more aggressive, according to Hyundai, with the automaker’s performance-oriented N Line influenced exterior, making the most of its low-slung, low-front end look.

The key to making the 2024 Sonata Hybrid look fresh from the outside seems to be the thin strip of horizontal lighting that protrudes up front—and a move away from the trapezoidal grille look that has distinguished the Sonata over the past few generations. With that comes a horizontal emphasis that extends to the lighting in the back.
On the vehicle’s side, the vents designed inside are an odd design detail, but fit as a cue opening to the beltline that extends to the rear of the vehicle.
From an interface standpoint, the most important change is Hyundai’s decision to move the gear lever behind the wheel — to create more space in the center console area, he says. Enabled by this, the console gets a new palm rest for the driver, lengthened armrests, and large cupholders and tray. But what’s also noteworthy is that Hyundai hasn’t done away with a set of hard buttons for the essentials — or the volume knob.
The Sonata gets a new twist on the brand’s dual 12.3-inch display, with a panoramic curved interface, and below the display space, the instrument panel emphasizes horizontal.

Hyundai also notes that the cabin has been upgraded with new color combinations to bring out both the sporty and premium sides of the Sonata at once.
Since this generation of Sonata Hybrid was released, the competition hasn’t changed much. Key competitors still include the Toyota Camry Hybrid, although the new 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid has the potential to be a disruptor. The 2023 Sonata Hybrid delivers a combined 47 mpg EPA — and we’ve observed that highway efficiency is its forte.

Inside and out, there are ties to Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 electric sedan—an indication, perhaps, that the automaker doesn’t see EV and ICE designs as mutually exclusive.
