The Chevrolet Silverado HD has been updated for the 2024 model year, and among those updates is the new ZR2 class.
The ZR2 is the brand name for an off-road-ready pickup truck, and the Silverado HD ZR2 is a heavy-duty truck that’s happy to hit the road and tow and haul all your gear.
It will be offered exclusively in the 2500 Crew Cab configuration, and in regular ZR2 and ZR2 Bison forms. As is the case with Chevy’s other ZR2 trucks, the Bison has been developed with American Expedition Vehicles off-road equipment and features upgrades designed to improve off-road capability notably though adding armor elements.
With either version of the Silverado HD ZR2, buyers get a DSSV spool-valve Multimatic damper, special front upper and lower control arms, custom steering knuckle, aluminum front skid plate, enlarged steel transfer case skid plate, rear e-locker, and alloy wheels. 18 inches wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. The ZR2 also rises 1.5 inches higher than the other Silverado HD trucks.

Also standard on both versions is the Off-Road driving mode which adjusts a number of vehicle systems, such as anti-lock brakes and traction and stability control. It also optimizes throttle and transmission settings for off-road driving.
Unique to the Bison are extras such as 18-inch AEV wheels, steel bumper with integrated recovery point and winch mounts (front only), special badges and interior details, plus steel skid plates for the front of the vehicle, steering rack, transfer case and exhaust.
The standard powertrain is a 6.6-liter V-8 but a 6.6-liter V-8 turbodiesel is available for serious towing. If properly equipped, a diesel powered truck crane’s rating is 18,500 pounds. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard on both powertrains.

For the interior, said Chevy, it added a material that is easy to clean after a day in the dirt. The available Silverado HD head-up display also has an off-road inclinometer. A surround-view camera system, which is always useful off-road, can also be added.
Production of the Silverado HD ZR2 began this summer at General Motors’ plant in Flint, Michigan. Pricing information will be announced ahead of the start of production.
The associated 2024 GMC Sierra HD will also receive the AT4X off-road class. GMC is saving its truck details for later this year.
