Volkswagen is seen testing a prototype for the redesigned Passat.
It’s due out later this year and is expected to be offered exclusively in wagon form, which VW calls the Variant.
Don’t look for a new Passat to reach the US. It won’t reach these shores even if it has a sedan option. That’s because the Passats sold in the US, which are out of the way after 2022, use a separate platform that is cheaper than the Passats sold worldwide.
Passat global uses the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, and the redesigned model will use the latest version of this platform featured on the new Golf and several other models in the VW Group brand portfolio.

Passat’s global corporate twin, the Skoda Superb, will also soon be redesigned on the updated MQB platform. However, Skoda is expected to be available in both sedan and wagon body styles.
The powertrain lineup should consist of a range of inline-4s, including several in a plug-in hybrid configuration. A redesigned Passat Alltrack soft-roader will also be present.

You may wonder why there is no sedan option offered for the Passat. While body styling has declined in most markets, apart from China, VW will be launching an alternative to the Passat sedan later this year in the form of the ID.7 electric car. The ID.7 is based on the VW Group’s MEB platform found on the ID.4 and the upcoming ID.Buzz, and is confirmed for sale in the US. ID.7 wagons are also planned and have the potential to reach US showrooms.
Production of the new Passat will be carried out at the VW Group factory in Bratislava, Slovakia. The ID.7 will be built at a factory in Emden, Germany.
